UPTOWN — An Uptown speed camera sandwiched between two cemeteries is one of the most active cameras in the city, racking up the sixth-most fines, data shows

The camera at 1142 W. Irving Park Road has collected $1.5 million in fines since it was installed Jan. 21, 2014, according to data obtained by a Freedom of Information Act.

Of 44,450 total tickets issued, 13,733 were $100 fines, which are issued if drivers are going 11 mph or faster over the speed limit.

Of the tickets, 3,765 carried $35 fines, which are issued if drivers are going exactly 10 mph over the limit, according to the data. First-time offenders, who only receive a warning, accounted for 26,952 of the total tickets.

Based on the data, the most popular time to speed is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

April 2014 saw the highest number of tickets; since then, there has been a jagged decline in the number of tickets collected by the Uptown camera.

Ben Woodard and Tanveer Ali break down the speed camera data:

Irving Park Road has been a big money-maker for the city. A camera located about two miles west at 2705 W. Irving Park Road racked up the fifth highest fines in the city, data shows.

According to the data, there are two other speed cameras in Uptown, both of them on Broadway. Those two cameras, at 4446 and 4429 N. Broadway, combined have dished out less than 1,500 tickets total, and racked up more than $88,000 in fines.

The Broadway cameras were installed about two weeks earlier than the one on Irving Park Road.

Here are all the stories looking at speed camera data across Chicago's neighborhoods.
