PILSEN — A Pilsen business is collecting donations for a family that lost everything in a devastating fire that ripped through two 21st Street apartment buildings Sunday.

Nitecap Coffee Bar is collecting donations for the Ochoa family, one of the families affected by the fire, said owner Aaron Marsh. Donations can be dropped off at the cafe, 1738 W. 18th St., from 6-10 p.m. Friday.

Two dozen people were displaced from their homes by the blaze.

Firefighters were called at 1:40 a.m. to the building at 1902 W. 21st St., and the extra-alarm blaze spread to a second apartment building forcing a total of 25 people from their homes.

Nitecap will accept: gift cards; cash; clothes in sizes men's 2XL and 3XL, men's pant sizes 40 and 42 and women's mediums and larges; canned goods and toiletries for the family.

Those who donate will receive a free iced coffee or regular coffee from Nitecap.

Marsh is also working to get in touch with other victims of the 21st Street fire. He can be reached at the coffee shop at 312-846-1149.

During a tour of her family's three-story building early Sunday, landlord Elaine Perez, whose family owns the second building the fire scorched, promised to rebuild. The building has been in her family for 50 years.
