ALBANY PARK — Incumbent Ald. Deb Mell (33rd) appears to be headed to a runoff against Tim Meegan in the 33rd ward.

Mell, daughter of former longtime Ald. Dick Mell, garnered 49.7 percent of the vote — but she needed more than 50 percent to avoid a runoff.

Tim Meegan came in second with 34.5 percent of the vote.

Meegan late Tuesday issued a statement saying the results showed voters want change.

"For too long, this ward has been represented by a machine that shuts the working families of the 33rd Ward out of the political process. Tonight, the people voted for a new direction," he said.

"My opponent had every possible advantage on her side. Money. Power. DNA. A 100-percent voting record with the mayor," he said. "What she didn't have was a record of standing up for the people she was supposed to represent."

Meegan said his campaign now has the momentum and has "the bosses in City Hall" afraid.
