UPTOWN — A man who was fatally shot in Uptown Saturday evening was a convicted felon and a known P-Stone gang member who was seen near a building that has a history of criminal activity, according to Ald. James Cappleman.

In a letter to constituents, the 46th ward alderman said the shooting victim, who was later identified as Demarcus Adams by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, was seen by eyewitnesses in an alley behind 4650 N. Malden Ave., a Chicago Housing Authority-operated building that includes a troubled apartment.

The alderman's office started receiving reports from neighbors about possible illegal activity in and around the unit in August, Cappleman told DNAinfo Chicago.

Following the reports, Cappleman began meeting with the 19th District Chicago police commander and the CHA's security director. A few months ago, CHA reported problems at the apartment to police, the letter said.

Now a legal case has been filed against the occupants, Cappleman said. A hearing date will take place within the next few months.

"I want to thank the neighbors who have been calling 911 to report suspicious activity, which is how the police were able to gather the evidence needed to assist CHA with this court case," he said in the letter.

The shooting happened around 5:05 p.m. Saturday, according to police.

Someone shot Adams, 28, of the 4400 block of North Racine Avenue, in the 1300 block of West Leland Avenue, authorities said. The shooter fled in a small, silver car, police said.

Adams was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital with gunshot wounds in his back and leg. He later died at the hospital at 5:44 p.m., according to the morgue.

A tactical team made up of 19th District Chicago police officers was stationed in the area before the shooting incident, and the team will stay in the area, Cappleman said.

"While crime has gone down overall, just one shooting is too many," the alderman said in the letter. "Every family and child should feel safe no matter where they are in the ward."

Residents are encouraged to attend the alderman's next public safety meeting at Truman College, 1145 W. Wilson Ave., on March 3 at 7 p.m.
