LINCOLN SQUARE — Blow-out furniture and mattress sales on Lincoln's Birthday are perhaps a stretch in terms of commemorating the Great Emancipator.

But Q Brothers and Merz Apothecary's bash in honor of Honest Abe makes a certain sense.

Lincoln was the first president, and one of only five, to sport a beard in office. Q Brothers is devoted to grooming products for men's facial hair. Ergo, party.

Patty Wetli researched the history of presidential facial hair:

On Thursday, both Merz, 4716 N. Lincoln Ave., and its little sibling Q Brothers, 4718 N. Lincoln Ave., will stay open until 8 p.m. Shoppers can check out items like Beardscent Bomade, good for taming those flyaway whiskers, which, just saying, Martin Van Buren, the last mutton chop president, could've used.

Q Brothers will also be serving up samples of something called Chocolate Love Tonic as a nod to Valentine's Day. It's a natural herbal tonic from Urban Moonshine that, in their words, "Kindles the flame of passion."

Coincidentally "Fifty Shades of Grey" opens Thursday just down the street at the Davis Theater, 4614 N. Lincoln Ave., with show times at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Plan accordingly.
