NEAR WEST SIDE — Classes will be back in session at Chicago Public Schools Tuesday, officials announced.
Classes were canceled on Monday because of the 19-plus inches of snow that fell Sunday and early Monday, but with the snow taking a break and the roads being cleared, CPS officials said it will be business as usual Tuesday.
During a blizzard briefing alongside Mayor Rahm Emanuel and top city department officials, Chicago Public Schools Vice President Board of Education Jesse Ruiz said classes are set to "resume Tuesday morning."
This is the third day classes have been canceled this winter. Last month, CPS canceled two days of classes due to subzero temperatures.
Ruiz emphasized student safety to be a top priority and factor in the decision to cancel classes.
"Due to a change in the forecast and a large accumulation of snow over the weekend, CPS made the determination to cancel classes and afterschool programing today," Ruiz said.
"While classes are canceled, all school buildings will remain open. CPS will not turn away any student from building and offer students a warm and comfortable environment for students to stay in, with supervision and meals provided." Ruiz added.
CPS is partnering with Department of Family Services, Chicago Public Libraries and the Park District to offer students emergency centers and indoor programing during days when schools are canceled, Ruiz said.
Facility workers on Monday are clearing sidewalks, walkways and parking lots in anticipation for students return to school.
