UNIVERSITY VILLAGE — The University Commons neighborhood came together Sunday to raise money for a nearby school while crafting some colorful chalk creations.
The second annual Chalk Drawing Fest raised $360 for Smyth Elementary School, according to Nancy Plax, director of community outreach for the neighborhood group Connecting 4 Communities. The University Commons Neighborhood Association will use that money to buy an iPad 2 for Smyth School, 1059 W. 13th St.
Adult artists were asked to donate $5 toward the cause in exchange for pastels, Plax said. Kids participate for free.
The fall event at 15th and Aberdeen streets, which featured food trucks and a jelly bean contest, brought 150 neighbors together Sunday.
Check out the colorful sidewalk creations — including sports logos and Dia de Los Muertos skulls — in our slideshow.
