PORTAGE PARK — Burrito lovers rejoice: Chipotle Mexican Grill's new restaurant at Six Corners is open.

Under construction since May 2013, Chipotle opened its doors Saturday at 4657 W. Irving Park Road on land that was once home to a clothing store and a bank.

Ald. John Arena (45th) — whose wife, Jill, was one of the first in line for a burrito — has said that Chipotle's investment in Six Corners will help convince other upscale, national chain stores to invest in the area.

Chipotle will be joined at Six Corners in the next few weeks by a Jimmy Johns sandwich shop at 4021 N. Milwaukee Ave. in the historic Klee building.

Although the area around Irving Park Road and Milwaukee and Cicero avenues has struggled for decades, it was once the city's premier shopping destination outside the Loop, with dozens of stores offering shoppers their hearts' desire and a chance to see a movie at the Portage Theater, built in the 1920s.
