ROSCOE VILLAGE — The Chicago River is perhaps best viewed at twilight, when the setting sun sends the waterway ashimmer and some of the stream's more reclusive inhabitants come out to play.

Join the Clark Park Advisory Council for an evening paddle up the river from 5:30-9 p.m. Sept. 14, departing from the WMS Clark Park Boat House, 3400 N. Rockwell St.

The fundraising event includes canoeing and kayaking, along with a catered dinner, silent auction, raffle and prizes. Proceeds will go toward park improvements.

Sharp-eyed paddlers will likely spot blue heron among the wildlife along the river, and those who row up to Montrose will gain a unique perspective on work being done to restore the riverbank at Horner Park. The stretch between Wilson and Lawrence avenues is uncommonly scenic, dotted with views of homes in Ravenswood Manor.

The cost is $55 per adult or $25 per child, which includes all equipment rental and dinner. Tickets can be bought online; registration is encouraged a week in advance.

Outdoor dining in the park is planned, but in the event of rain dinner will be served in the boathouse.
