LAKEVIEW — Lakeview, you're getting a PetSmart.

The national pet-supply chain plans to open a store in Halsted Flats, 3740 N. Halsted St., sometime in October, a spokeswoman confirmed.

The roughly 5,800-square-foot store will sit on the corner of Halsted and Bradley, according to renderings from developer Harlem Irving.

PetSmart offered few details, but Ald. James Cappleman (46th) said the store wanted to create a scaled-down "urban concept" in Lakeview.

The move is "pretty smart," Cappleman said at a recent community meeting.

"There's a huge amount of dog owners in the 44th Ward and 46th Ward," he said. "And a lot of ward residents in both wards don't have cars."

Halsted Flats is a mixed-use high-rise building that opened this year despite initial community backlash.

There are two additional retail spaces on the ground floor, but no word yet about what's moving in. Cappleman aide Abby Sullivan said the building received numerous bids and "can be picky."

Developers didn't respond to requests for comment.
