HYDE PARK — An argument over the new principal for Ray Elementary School has resulted in neither candidate being selected and Chicago Public Schools naming a new interim principal Monday.

Elena Savoy, who has served as assistant principal under interim Principal Antonia Hill, took over as the new interim principal on Monday at Ray, 5631 S. Kimbark Ave.

As of Monday, Hill took over as the interim principal at Drake Elementary School, 2710 S. Dearborn St., according a CPS spokeswoman.

The Ray Local School Council deadlocked on June 5, with council members unable to resolve a split between factions that wanted to hire Hill; those who wanted to hire Beth Bazer, the top pick of principal selection committee; and council members who wanted to start the process over.

Bazer has withdrawn herself from consideration for the Ray job, according to members of the principal selection committee.

It is unclear the position of Lisa Dallaqua, another top candidate of the principal selection committee.

“To the extent that, as LSC chairman, I was responsible for designing and leading the process, I apologize for the failure and for how hard the past six weeks have been on Ray families, staff and neighbors,” said Gordon Mayer, chairman of the council. “We do things the hard way at Ray: thoroughly and by trying to build consensus through dialog and a democratic process.”

The incoming council members are expected to restart the principal selection process when they take their seats on July 1.

Mayer and the other parent representative members of the council were all voted out in the April election.
