BRIDGEPORT — A Mediterranean restaurant specializing in carry-out and delivery orders is coming soon to the neighborhood.
Tanoor Mediterranean and Mexican Grill is moving from its Pilsen location to the corner building at 2923 S. Archer Ave., former home to Carlito's Way pizzeria. It will open May 1.
"We usually need people to try us just one time" before becoming regulars, owner Ayman Abu-Taleb said.
The restaurant will focus on entrees like Shish Tawook and Shish Kabob — char-broiled chicken or beef served with grilled vegetables — homemade hummus, falafel and a marinated chicken shawarma dish that "is our main hit," Abu-Taleb said.
In a nod to its old Pilsen location, the restaurant will also prepare Mexican-inspired appetizers (ceviche and guacamole) and entrees like beef, chicken, steak and shrimp fajita dishes.
All of the dishes can be catered throughout the Downtown area, even to Indiana and Wisconsin.
Abu-Taleb, of Berwyn, is part of a family that runs other restaurants in the city, including Lincoln Park's Zig Zag Kitchen and Uptown's Atolito Kitchen.
He said the Bridgeport Mediterranean restaurant, with its Halal cuisine, will focus on high-quality ingredients, especially in the hummus, which until recently was prepared and packaged at the restaurant and made available in several Chicago grocers.
When grocers wanted more shelf life from the product, Abu-Taleb said he refused to sully his creation by adding preservatives and chemicals.
"We try to make things very simple ... we like people to enjoy what we do," he said.
