CHICAGO — Firefighters found a dead man as they doused a townhome fire close to the border of Near West Side and River North Wednesday morning, officials said.

Responders were putting out the fire and searching for possible victims in the 300 block of North Canal Street when they found a dead man in the living room, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

The fire started about 10:10 a.m., police said.

He was identified as 70-year-old James Whitner of the same address by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He was pronounced dead at 10:48 a.m.

The cause of the fire and the cause of the man's death are under investigation.

No other injuries were reported.
