CHICAGO — A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder in the death of a 15-year-old boy shot in April just blocks away from President Barack Obama's home.

Kevin Culverson of the 700 block of East 50th Place in Kenwood is charged with first-degree murder.

Around 9:40 p.m. April 22, Culverson opened fire with a handgun on a group of men in the 5000 block of South Evans Avenue killing 15-year-old Cornelius German, authorities said.

German, a freshman at Kenwood Academy High School, called out "call my mama" after being shot.

Cornelius' mother, Timika Rutledge-German was on her way to pick up her son when she saw a man run away from a corner and police show up minutes later.

"Everything in me, my whole soul, my whole being said, 'That's your baby,'" Rutledge-German said after the shooting.

She said she walked to the backyard and saw her son's body covered with a white sheet.

Culverson is expected to appear in bond court Wednesday.
