CHICAGO — A human skull — without a body — was found on a tray in a cooler in the county morgue, and officials are trying to determine where it came from.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office is investigating after an autopsy technician found the skull Wednesday at its facilities at 2121 W. Harrison St., authorities said.

So far, authorities have been unable to determine which body the skull came from or who was investigating it. The medical examiner's office had no further details about the skull Thursday afternoon.

Last summer, Chief Medical Examiner Stephen Cina was hired in the wake of an embarrassing series of events that included reports of employees napping on the job and fallout from photos taken of bodies stacked up in the morgue.
