UPTOWN — Crew Bar and Grill is closed until Wednesday as workers put the finishing touches on its new facade.

Crew, a sports-themed gay bar at 4804 N. Broadway, closed for a week in September to complete nearly $100,000 in renovations — with more than half of the money coming from a city Small Business Improvement Fund grant.

The renovation in September included new floors, repainted ceilings and walls, reconfiguration of the interior and improvements to insulation to make it warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

But the owners said then that Crew's most exciting upgrade, a new custom-built facade made out of steel, glass and quartz, would be unveiled in October.

Crew was closed Monday and is closed Tuesday "for new facade work," according to a construction update on the Crew website, which invited patrons to "come check us out on Wednesday."

The facade will be more open with 11 feet of glass (compared to about six feet previously), something that will allow more sunlight in, according to co-owner Mark Robertson. The new facade should also be without partitions and allow the owners to completely open it up when weather permits.

"In the summer when the weather's good and we have the sidewalk cafe open ... we can fold open the glass doors so people can walk in and out freely," Robertson said.

Robertson is part of a team that also owns SoFo Tap, 4923 N. Clark St. The group recently bought the former T's Bar, 5025 N. Clark St., with plans of transforming it into an upscale Mexican restaurant and bar.

T's was a 12-year nightlife staple popular among Chicago lesbians. It closed abruptly in March after the landlord evicted former owner Colm Treacy for what she said was Treacy falling behind on several months' rent.
