Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Charged in Indiana Road-Rage Killing

CHICAGO — A correctional officer at Cook County Jail has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting an Indiana man in a road-rage incident in Hammond, Ind.

Edgard Singleton, 61, of Chicago, was charged in the murder of Montrell Moss, 23, of East Chicago, Ind., the Times of Northwest Indiana reported.

Moss was driving to the Horseshoe Casino to have dinner with his girlfriend, his son and her two chidlren, his family told WGN News. Singleton allegedly shot Moss after Moss threw a full cup of water at a van driven by Singleton.

Police told the Times Singleton fired a single shot from a 9 mm handgun, hitting Moss in the neck. Singleton fled the scene, police said. The van was later stopped, and police found the weapon and shell casings, the newspaper reported.

The sheriff's office revoked Singleton's star in the aftermath of the incident, and is in the process of terminating him, said Ben Breit, a spokesman for Sheriff Tom Dart. Breit said Singleton had been an employee of the sheriff's office since 1991.
