NORTH PARK — For the thirteenth year in a row, Northside College Prep was ranked the No. 1 high school in Illinois by U.S. News & World Report.

The school also climbed to No. 33 in the nation, according to the magazine's survey.

In addition, Chicago Public Schools had the four highest rated high schools in the state, the magazine declared. Nipping at Northside's heels were Walter Payton College Prep (No. 2), Jones College Prep (3) and Whitney Young (4).

U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 21,000 high schools in the United States. Criteria included the number of students taking and passing advanced placement classes and whether a school's minority and low-income students performed better than the state average for their peers.

Lincoln Park High School (11), Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep (13) and Lane Tech College Prep (14) also cracked the Top 20.

All of those highly competitive schools achieved gold medal status, meeting all of the benchmarks established by the magazine — only 19 high schools in Illinois received gold medals.

Von Steuben (51) and Lake View (55) high schools were among Chicago Public Schools' silver medalists, demonstrating high college readiness among students, the magazine said.
