WOODLAWN — Lekiah White was four months pregnant when she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head in her South Side apartment on May 12.

Her two young children were the first to find her in the ransacked home on the 6400 block of South Maryland Avenue, said a neighbor, Barbara McClendon.

“It was strange because I usually hear everything that goes on, but that particular night I hadn’t heard anything,” McClendon said. A similar statement from another neighbor was reported in ABC Chicago.

White was going to nursing school at the time of her death, said McClendon. The 28-year-old woman was well-known in the building, where a memorial to her was erected shortly after her death.

“She was very boisterous,” McClendon said with a laugh. “So therefore everyone in the neighborhood knew her. Everyone was here for her memorial.”

“Pinky,” as she was known, could be heard a mile off, according to McClendon.

“She was so nice and polite,” she said. “We had known her for years. She called me mom.”

White’s family couldn’t be reached. According to McClendon, her mother had died years ago and her father is currently in jail.

“It’s sad that her family couldn’t stop by to talk to us about her,” she said. “I thought the police would come and ask more questions. They never did.”

White leaves behind two children, ages 8 and 6.
