CHICAGO LAWN — Ulysses Martin never liked to fight. “Dickie,” as his seven siblings liked to call him, died in the crossfire of someone else’s dispute, his family said.

Martin, 49, of the 6100 block of Maplewood Avenue in Chicago Lawn, was killed April 2 in the 6200 block of South Fairfield Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

“That was my big brother,” said his sister Katrina Martin. “He taught me how to survive. He taught me everything.”

When she was pregnant with twins, doctors told Katrina Martin that she or her children might not survive childbirth.

Dickie soothed her and saw her through the ordeal.

“Whenever I was weak, I called my big brother,” she said.

Martin was a father of three: Thomas, 31; Latasikeas, 19 and Chavonta, 18. Martin also helped raise his sister Katrina’s 10 children.

“Anytime something was wrong,” Martin’s sister said, “the first thing they’d cry would be, ‘Uncle Dickie!’”

Martin graduated from Englewood High School and worked for 30 years as a manager at Papa T’s Pizzeria, his family said.

He liked to have philosophical debates, which his sister said would begin with Dickie saying “Let me enlighten you.”

He would always win, she said.
