DUNNING — An elderly woman was stabbed to death by her mentally ill son in Dunning, according to authorities and court records.

Elaine Nerone, 84, was attacked by her son, Joseph Nerone, on March 30 in their home in the 3800 block of North Normandy Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and court records.

Joseph Nerone told a psychiatrist that he killed his mother because a voice told him "If you kill your mother, I’ll take away all evil,” court records show. He allegedly told authorities that Satan was in him and Satan had killed his mother.

Joseph Nerone, 55, has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, court records show. Those records indicated he had not been taking his prescribed medication at the time of the offense.

In 2011, Joseph Nerone was charged with battery after attacking a neighbor while claiming to be God, the Tribune reported.
