AUBURN GRESHAM — A young man was shot to death by a gang member near his home in Auburn Gresham on May 17, police said.

Sidney McDowell, 22, was shot in the chest in the 7900 block of South Laflin Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The suspect, Kato Ware, 19, pulled up in an SUV, got out of the vehicle and shot McDowell in the chest with a handgun before fleeing south on Laflin, police said.

Ware, a previously convicted felon who had gang affiliations, was arrested Oct. 31 after being identified by witnesses, according to authorities. He was charged with first-degree murder.
