NORWOOD PARK — Demolition crews last week scraped away the last remains of Mike's Flower Shop Inc., 6500 N. Milwaukee Ave., to free up space for four townhomes expected to hit the market next year at $500,000 each.

The three-bedroom, 2½-bathroom homes will include open basements with ample room for an extra resident, developer Marty Murphy said.

Each unit will also have its own 700-square-foot backyard and at least one underground parking space.

"They're basically going to be like single-family homes," Murphy said. "They'll have basements and parking underneath, so it'll feel like it's a detached house."

The project was originally zoned for commercial use, but an "informal survey" revealed that most nearby residents would rather see new neighbors on the property than another business, Murphy said.

Murphy is aiming to see construction wrap up by spring, he said.
