LOGAN SQUARE — Popular California-based stand Milk & Wood, which specializes in handmade ice cream bars drizzled with chocolate and topped with cookies and Froot Loops, has just one location in Chicago — inside an unassuming Logan Square crab restaurant.

The ice cream counter debuted about a year ago when The Crab Pad, 2529 N. Milwaukee Ave. opened to the public, but now is the time to check it out, co-owner Theresa Tran said.

At first, Tran and her business partner, Andrew Nguyen, were focused on getting the crab restaurant off the ground, so they were only serving simple flavors like vanilla and cookies and cream from the counter.

But after a year of experimenting with recipes, the pair is ready to debut the bigger and bolder flavors Milk & Wood is known for like green tea Kit Kat, ube (taro), cookie monster, s'mores and cereal.

Customers are encouraged to pick a chocolate drizzle and toppings, which give the bars a colorful, Instagram-worthy look.

"We're not a serious couple, so we want everything in here to be just like us. It's just fun. And we want to continue that with the pops," Tran said.

Each ice cream bar costs $4 without toppings and $5 with toppings.

The topping-heavy ice cream bar trend is popular in California. In addition to Milk & Wood, which operates out of San Jose, there's also Popbar, which has multiple locations. Logan Square's Milk & Wood counter is a franchise.

The Crab Pad is celebrating its one-year anniversary Aug. 20 with $20 all-you-can-eat crawfish and giveaways.
