Convicted Rapist Tapes 'Talk Show' On Illegal Laptop At Jail: Officials

By Kelly Bauer | December 17, 2016 3:36pm

CHICAGO — A convicted child rapist used a contraband laptop to record a "talk show" while at Cook County Jail, officials said.

Jimmie Smith, who earlier this year pleaded guilty to raping teen girls and two women, has been in the jail seven years. He was arrested in May 2009 but his case was repeatedly delayed while he racked up more charges.

But Smith was able to get an illegal laptop into the jail, according to a news release from the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office released a video they said showed Smith punching a woman correctional lieutenant. The video shows a man pulling apart a laptop and then punching the woman while correctional officers try to take away the laptop.

Smith has been charged with aggravated battery to correctional staff, the sheriff's office said.

Officials reviewed the laptop and found Smith had recorded several "talk-show style" videos for a series he dubbed "My Back's Against The Wall," officials said.

The laptop also had "lewd" pictures of Smith at various places within the jail, officials said.

In a video released by the office, Smith says, "Hello, this is Jimmie Smith. Welcome to this episode of 'My Back Against The Wall.' Coming to you live from Crook County Jail."

The video then cuts to Smith eating food on top of a microwave before he grimaces at the camera and apparently stops recording.

Smith, who has acted as his own attorney, was given access to a laptop as he prepared for his defense, but officials said an investigation into how Smith got this laptop and kept it was ongoing.

While in custody, Smith has been accused of trying to hire someone to murder a prosecutor and judge and allegedly used a shank to attack his public defender.

Smith's next court date is Wednesday, the sheriff's office said, and arrest warrants are being sought for two women who officials think helped Smith.
