Fight On Halsted Street Bus Ends With Woman Pepper-Sprayed

By Joe Ward | May 5, 2016 3:42pm | Updated on May 5, 2016 4:02pm

CHICAGO — A fight between a man and a woman aboard a Halsted Street bus in Lincoln Park Thursday ended with pepper spray being discharged in the bus, officials and witnesses said.

Matthew Glynn was on the No. 8 Halsted bus heading southbound at 9 a.m. near Fullerton Avenue when the fight broke out between a middle aged man and woman.

He said a woman in a wheelchair was trying to get off the bus, and another woman moving out of her way stepped on a man's foot. The man then said something to the woman before spraying her in the face with what Glynn said seemed like pepper spray.

"He said something to her, then a few seconds later he sprayed something in her face," Glynn said.

A short shoving match then broke out between the two, Glynn said. The man then got off the bus and headed westbound down Fullerton Avenue.

The bus driver pulled over, called police and asked everyone to get off the bus, he said.

Glynn said he did not suffer from the pepper spray, though he was towards the back of the bus and the fight happened near the front.

A Chicago Transit Authority spokesman confirmed the incident and said the woman who was sprayed was the only one to report an injury, and that she refused medical attention on the scene.

A police spokesman said officers responded to the scene but that no report was filed.

Glynn said the incident made for an interesting commute to work.

"It was the craziest thing I've seen on a bus," he said.
