CHICAGO — A fire in South Austin injured two firefighters and left a man dead, an official said.
At 10 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a report of a blaze in the 300 block of North Central Avenue, said Chief Juan Hernandez, a Chicago Fire spokesman. The fire was on the second floor of a four-story apartment building.
One firefighter fell down an elevator shaft about 20 feet and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious to critical condition, Hernandez said. Another firefighter had a "minor injury" and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.
One man was killed in the fire and 30 people were left homeless, Hernandez said. The fire was put out at 10:48 p.m.
