HUMBOLDT PARK — A second-floor apartment fire left one woman dead and a man in serious condition in Humboldt Park early Wednesday morning, according to Fire Department officials.

A few minutes before 1 a.m., officials said, firefighters arrived at the brownstone apartment above a corner grocery store in the 1000 block of North Hamlin Avenue.

Responders found a woman in her "mid 40s" unresponsive and administered CPR, they said. She was taken to Norwegian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A "70 plus" year-old man was also rescued from the building and taken to Norwegian Hospital, where he was treated for heavy smoke inhalation, officials said. He was listed in "serious to stable" condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
