CHICAGO — Tuesday's going to — hopefully — be as cold as it gets this week.

Temperatures in the city could reach as high as 12 degrees, but strong, chilly winds will make it feel like it's minus 10 or minus 15 degrees outside, meteorologist Tom Kines said. Anyone who has to go outside should take steps to protect themsleves from frostbite, Kines said.

"I wouldn't test it," Kines said. "If you have to be outside, it's a routine where you dress in layers, you protect your exposed skin, the hands, your ears, your nose, those parts of your body that are most susceptible to frostbite. Wear a hat."

The sun will be out at times and no snow is expected, Kines said.

But, the National Weather Service is warning the 1-3 inches of snow that hit the city on Monday night could blow and drift, causing driving hazards, due to Tuesday's 30 mph winds.

This chart from the National Weather Service can be used to predict how long it would take for frostbite to set in. The city will see 30 mph winds and a high temperature  of 12 degrees on Tuesday, meteorologists predicted. [National Weather Service]

The rest of the week is expected to be warmer, Kines said: Wednesday could see the city get as warm as 20 degrees and the wind "won't be as bad," and temperatures will rise to the mid- or upper 30s by Thursday and Friday.

"We can get through [Tuesday], we can probably make it through the rest of the week," Kines said.

The bad news: More cold air is expected to hit the city at the end of the weekend or early next week, making for "another bout of pretty cold weather," Kines said.
