CHICAGO — A spate of holiday shootings starting on Christmas Eve left one person dead and six others injured, police said.
• Around 4:50 p.m. Thursday, in the 7300 block of South Vernon Avenue, a 30-year-old man was fatally shot in the head, according to a Chicago Police spokesperson.
Witnesses told detectives they heard gunshots and immediately called police, police said. Police discovered the man outside, where he was pronounced dead.
He was later identified as Craig Harris, 30, who lived on the same block where he was shot, according to county records.
Police said the man is a documented gang member
• Earlier in the day, around 12:15 p.m., a 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the leg in the 3900 block of West Van Buren Street. Police say the shooter approached the boy, opened fire and then ran away.
• Around 9 p.m., in the 700 block of West Evergreen Avenue, a 24-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder. She was nursed to stable condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
• About an hour later, a 14-year-old boy walking down the sidewalk in the 2300 block of West 72nd Street was shot in the arm.
The boy told police he only heard the shots and then felt pain. He was also nursed to stable condition at Christ Medical Center.
• Early Friday morning, two men sitting in a car suffered gunshot wounds from a shooter in another car.
Around 2 a.m., the men — one 40, the other 20 — were in a car near the corner of 47th Street and South Loomis, where a vehicle pulled up alongside them and someone fired shots.
The 40-year-old man was shot in the head and transported to Stroger Hospital, where he’s in "grave" condition. A bullet grazed the 20-year-old man’s back, but he refused medical attention at the scene.
Both victims are documented gang members.
• Around 3:40 a.m. Friday in the 1600 block of West 44th Street, a 22-year-old man on a bicycle was shot multiple times in the body by the driver of a white van who stuck a gun out the window and pulled the trigger.
The victim landed at Stroger Hospital in serious condition.
