NORWOOD PARK — A CTA bus was stopped and nine of its passengers hospitalized after kids threw a smoke bomb Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Around 3:52 p.m., a disturbance was reported aboard the #91 Austin route traveling southbound around Nagle Avenue and Higgins Avenue, according to Catherine Hosinski, CTA spokeswoman. Chicago Fire and Police officials responded to the scene.

Someone had thrown a smoke bomb aboard the bus and eight students plus the bus driver were treated then taken to nearby hospitals, according to Commander Curtis Hudson, a Fire spokesman. He referred to them as "walking wounded," with non-life-threatening issues.

Nine other passengers refused treatment, Hudson said. Fire officials cleared the scene shortly thereafter.

The remaining passengers were put on the next available bus, Hosinski said, and there were no remaining delays or re-route necessary.

Chicago Police declined to comment.
