UPTOWN — At a CAPS meeting for Beat 1913 Tuesday, officers blamed petty thefts for an increase in crime over the last month.

From Sept. 6 to Oct. 6, the beat reported 10 thefts of less than $500, seven thefts from retail stores and six thefts of more than $500. Those were the top three crimes committed during the time period, police said at the meeting at Truman College, at 1145 W. Wilson Ave.

"Thefts are what really increased this month," said Community Police Sgt. Jason Clark. "There were a couple thefts around the CTA ... lots of loitering. Otherwise it was pretty quiet."

Beat 1913 is bordered by Montrose Avenue on the south, Lawrence Avenue on the north, Broadway on the east and Clark Street on the west.

At the last meeting, officers reported a 5 percent decrease in major crime for the month of August and that total crime was down 40 percent in August. Last month's Top 10 crimes amounted to about 34 crimes and this month's Top 10 amounted to about 47 incidents, according to the stats.
