WICKER PARK — A family-run Middle Eastern restaurant that opened 11 months ago has closed its doors, a decision that was prompted by sluggish business during the first year, according to a spokeswoman for Mish Grill.

"We loved our customers and had our repeating customers but it was not enough," said Naheel "Hal" Hinnawi, daughter of Chef Mohammad "Abe" Hinnawi, owner of Mish Grill, which opened last October at 1413 N. Ashland Ave. about two blocks north of the Polish Triangle at Ashland, Division and Milwaukee avenues.

Replacing the long-shuttered Marrakech restaurant, Hinnawi's Mish Grill offered traditional Middle Eastern dishes such as hummus, falafel and shawarma, as well as steak, veal, fish and beef kabob dinner entrees.

Saturday was the grill's final day in business in Wicker Park, Hal Hinnawi said.

Molly Huber, a special events coordinator for the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce, whose office is across from Mish Grill, alerted DNAinfo Chicago to the restaurant's closure on Monday.

"Our whole staff loved their food, they were attentive to customers, and they were excited about the restaurant," Huber said.

Mish Grill was an expansion of Mishkenut Mediterranean, a popular eatery in Munster, Ind., that opened seven years ago and is also run by the Hinnawi family.
