CHICAGO — Across the city at least 336 people were shot during August, a 12 percent increase from the same month last year.
Based on DNAinfo's count, compiled through a combination of FOIA requests to police and in-house record-keeping, 336 people were shot during August in 257 separate incidents. Of the people shot, 44 died.
The number was up 8 percent and the number of victims was up 12 percent over the same month last year, according to DNAinfo's count.
One of the August shootings occurred in the 7400 block of South Harvard Avenue, near a corner that has garnered national attention since an "army of moms" set up post in June to combat gun violence there.
After Dwayne Thomas, a 20-year-old who lives just blocks away, was killed on Aug. 19, the moms opted to hold a barbecue on the corner.
"We'll be here. We're not afraid," said one of the Mothers Against Senseless Killing, Faye McCullough, 67, of Bronzeville. "We're like the front line."
Other shootings include:
• Two blocks from President Obama's Kenwood home, 25-year-old Reginald Sanson was killed in a daytime drive-by shooting.
• On Aug. 2, gunmen interrupted a college send-off party in an Austin Home, killing one and wounding four others.
• Last week, 23-year-old Kortney Blakes was killed and four others were injured when a gunman opened fire near Horan Park in East Garfield Park.
