CHICAGO — At least one parachutist performing in the Chicago Air and Water Show Saturday is undergoing surgery after hitting a building, according to media reports and a U.S. Army official.
"There was an incident, and someone is in the hospital undergoing surgery," said Donna Dixon, spokeswoman for the U.S. Army Golden Knights. Dixon declined to comment any further on the nature of the incident or the injuries.
Two military parachute jumpers were injured around 10:30 a.m., with one landing on the beach and one landing in the 1400 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to ABC7. One was critically injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The second parachutist, with the Navy Leap Frogs parachute team, was taken to Northwestern and not critically injured, according to the Tribune.
A witness said the army parachutist's feet clipped the side of the roof before he fell: "His legs caught the tip of the roof, and then he fell over. It was horrible," Heather Mendenhall told the Tribune. "If he was only one foot closer to the roof, the maintenance guy could've grabbed him."
Chicago Police and Fire departments declined to comment, referring to their Army and Navy counterparts. The Navy spokesman could not immediately be reached.
