WEST LOOP — Twenty luxury condos will replace a popular West Loop bar that closed earlier this month.

The Union Park Lounge sports bar closed earlier this month, according to a Facebook post. A real estate broker involved in the deal said developers just closed on a plan to bring 20 luxury units to the bar's former home at 228 S. Racine Ave.

After six years in business, owners of the bar announced their closure on June 28 via Facebook. Union Park Lounge, a popular outpost for young professionals as well as Bulls and Blackhawks fans on their way to the United Center, poured its last drink less than a week later.

The planned condos will all be three-bedroom units, and they'll be ready for sale in 12 to 18 months, according to Armando Chacon, a partner with Century 21 SGR.

"I think this is a positive development in that it satisfies a growing and unmet need for larger residential units in the West Loop," said Chacon, who's also president of the West Central Association Chamber of Commerce. "Obviously we never like to lose businesses, but we do seem to have enough bars and restaurants in the area that already fulfill that need."
