Lollapalooza Is Chicago's Biggest Weekend for Underage Drinking: Study

By Tanveer Ali | July 29, 2015 5:11pm

CHICAGO — More than 100 underage drinkers were admitted to emergency rooms over Lollapalooza weekend in 2014, the highest of any three-day weekend that year, according to a Lurie Children's Hospital study.

The Streeterville-based hospital analyzed emergency room data from 2014 to determine how many teens were admitted for treatment because of alcohol.

Last Lollapalooza weekend 102 youngsters were hospitalized, more than twice the 45 admitted during the weekend of another music festival, Spring Awakening.

Other weekends with marquee music events ranked high, too: In October, 20 people were admitted the weekend that electronic dance music superstar Skrillex played at Navy Pier. Seventeen were admitted the weekend of Pitchfork Music Festival.

As far as holidays go, St. Patrick's Day weekend ranked the highest, sending 21 teens to the hospital for drinking-related emergencies.

But Thanksgiving weekend, which for many mean family and food, only three teenagers drank too much to be admitted to a Chicago hospital.
