Man Killed Blocks Away From Fatal South Shore Shooting the Night Before

By Josh McGhee | July 7, 2015 12:49pm | Updated on July 7, 2015 12:53pm

CHICAGO — A man was killed Tuesday morning just blocks from where two teens were shot, one fatally, in South Shore Monday night, police said.

The shooting occurred around 9:45 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Chappell Avenue, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police spokesman. Police said the man was standing on the sidewalk when two men walked up and opened fire, then fled.

The man, who police said was "in his 20s," was shot in his abdomen and chest. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in an unknown condition and later died, Estrada said.

Police said no one is in custody for the shooting, but detectives are investigating.

Around 5:30 p.m. Monday, a 16-year-old boy was killed and a 17-year-old boy was seriously wounded after they were shot just two blocks away in the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue when someone got out of a red car and began shooting, police said.

The shooting was just two blocks away from a fatal shooting Monday night.

At the scene, police blocked off portions of 79th Street east of Jeffrey Boulevard, a section witnesses said has been a hotspot for crime. A red Ford Taurus sat more abandoned than parked between the yellow and red police tape. Around 10:30 a.m., an officer moved the car to a side street.

Listen to scanner audio after the shooting:

One witness, who refused to give her name, said she saw two men run up and shoot the man who looked to be in his 20s several times as she was entering the nearby Walgreens.

"They got out of the car and shot him right there," she said pointing to a dark hat lying next to the gate in front of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, 7851 S. Jeffrey Blvd. "I could've walked up and took a picture I was so close."

The shooting rerouted No. 79 buses in both directions, the CTA said.

Mike, who refused to give his last name, said he had driven past the scene of Monday night's shooting just minutes before it happened. Then, Tuesday morning, he was disappointed to see police investigating another shooting scene in the neighborhood.

"It's too early. It's too early in the morning for this," the 39-year-old said. "It's so unnecessary. You get tired of it. It's becoming an everyday thing."

Mike and the throngs of residents surrounding the tape weren't optimistic that the violence would be stopping anytime soon.

"It's gonna be worse than this. With those two fatalities there might be more today," he said.
