SOUTH SHORE — A 16-year-old boy is dead and a 17-year-old boy is seriously wounded after they were shot in South Shore Monday evening, police said.

The boys were walking on the 7900 block of South Merrill Avenue when a man jumped out of a red car at about 5:30 p.m. and opened fire on them, according to Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police spokesman. Afterward, Zala said, the man fled in an unknown direction.

Paramedics pronounced the 16-year-old dead at the scene, Zala said. The 17-year-old was brought to South Shore Hospital after being shot in the back, where he's now in serious condition, Zala said.

Police said both teens were documented gang members.
