MOUNT GREENWOOD — Dollar Tree will replace the shuttered Family Pride Finer Foods in Mount Greenwood, Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th) confirmed Tuesday.

The grocery store at 10601 S. Pulaski Road closed in February. Owner Robert Marthaler blamed increased competition from Jewel-Osco, Pete's Fresh Market and Mariano's.

The business was sold to Seneca Real Estate Development, according to an email newsletter sent from O'Shea's office on Tuesday.

"The new owners contacted my office with plans to renovate the building for a new Dollar Tree location. On several occasions, I communicated that this use was not something that our community would support and made suggestions for other possible tenants," O'Shea wrote in the e-blast.

But he said the Chicago-based owners showed little interest in other tenants and plan to move ahead with the project as the building is already zoned for use as a retail business.

"While I cannot prevent a Dollar Tree from opening at this location, I have already denied their request for any type of signage that would cross over the public way," said O'Shea, adding he also has requested frequent inspections on the property as the building transitions.

"Once the Dollar Tree is open, I would ask all residents to keep in mind the lack of concern shown for our community during this process when making their shopping choices," he said.

A representative of the owners did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
