COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Two men were arrested Monday night after they allegedly exchanged gunfire with police in Englewood.

Officers patrolling the neighborhood heard gunshots about 9:15 p.m. and rushed to the 6100 block of South Laflin Street, where they saw two men running with objects in their hands, police said.

When officers tried to stop the men, a chase ensued, according to Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman. Shots were fired by the officers and the men, but no one was injured during the exchange.

Jeremy Watts, 23, appeared in bond court Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault of a peace officer, aggravated discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest.

His accomplice, 19-year-old Rasheen Crenshaw, is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Prosecutors said Watts tried to evade police by scaling a fence. But as he put his weight on it, the fence fell back on top of Watts and hit the police officer who'd been chasing him, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

Watts then began punching the officer, according to an arrest report, and was eventually detained by several officers.

Watts, of the 5300 block of South Bishop Street, is currently awaiting trial for a separate 2014 gun case. He was arrested in July 2014 and released on a $25,000 bond.

On Tuesday, Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. set Watts' bail at $500,000.
