Belmont Cragin Speed Cameras Rack Up Nearly $2.5 Million in Fines

CHICAGO — Speed cameras in Belmont Cragin and Hermosa have dished out almost $2.5 million in fines from motorists since early 2014, data shows.

The 11 cameras saw more than 73,000 violations, though not all motorists were fined.

Speed cameras in Chicago can issue $35 tickets for motorists going six to 10 miles over the speed limit (but are currently only ticketing those going 10 and over), and $100 tickets for those going 11 or more miles per hour over the speed limit. First-time offenders get a warning.

The highest earning speed camera in Belmont Cragin and Hermosa is just west of Cicero on Fullerton, at 4843 W. Fullerton Ave. The camera assessed an average of almost $3,300 per day, capturing an average of 101 violations per day.

The camera assessed a total of $649,695 between February 2014 and April 2015, putting it in the top 30 highest earners of the city's 146 speed cameras, as of April 2, 2015.

The highest-earning speed cameras in all of Chicago were in the Washington Park, West Pullman and East Side neighborhoods, with the highest earner bringing in more than $3.1 million for the city.

The sole speed camera in Hermosa is at 4620 W. Belmont Ave.
