The Chicago Celebs (And Cedric Benson) Who've Been Busted on the Edens

By DNAinfo Staff | April 29, 2015 12:31pm

CHICAGO — When Richard Dent allegedly got clocked doing 107 mph early Tuesday, he joined a club of local celebrities busted for turning Chicago's Edens Expressway into a speedway.

The Sackman, a Hall of Famer and the Bears' Super Bowl XX MVP, was in his 2010 Range Rover when he was stopped on the Edens (speed limit 55 mph) near Willow Road just before 2 a.m., according to Pioneer Press, which quoted a police report that noted Dent was "very cooperative."

Here are some other celebrity stops on the Edens, which runs from Chicago's Northwest Side into the northern suburbs (where many Chicago athletes live):

1) In 2013, Chief Keef got nailed doing 110 mph on the same stretch of expressway. The Chicago rapper, 17 at the time, was in a 2011 BMW X6 when he was stopped at 3:18 a.m. "That's a fast car," he told the arresting officer. "That's why I bought it."

While just a traffic ticket, the arrest and conviction haunted Keef because it led to multiple jail stints when he kept failing drug tests.

2) In 2007, then-Bears linebacker Lance Briggs made front page news when he lost control of his brand new Lamborghini Murcielago on the Edens. He spun out, went onto the grass and hit the concrete bridge support at Devon Avenue.

Briggs, who wasn't hurt, left the $400,000 car on the side on the expressway, prompting the Sun-Times to run a Page 1 photo of the abandoned car with the headline: "Silence of the Lamborghini."

He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Someone memorialized the crash by spray-painting Briggs' number — 55 — on the concrete bridge support. The paint could be seen for years after the accident.

3) In 2008, Bears running back Cedric Benson had to pay $510 for doing 77 mph through a construction zone on the Edens at 3 a.m. in his 2005 BMW, according to WBBM.

4) In 1986, Bears star Dan Hampton got clocked doing 74 mph on the Edens Spur, according to the Tribune. He refused a Breathalyzer and was charged with DUI.
