BEVERLY — If there is one gift that my Mom always wants for Mother’s Day — or any day for that matter — it’s an Original Rainbow Cone.

And since your mother probably has similar good taste, here’s a little tip guaranteed to make her day that won’t cost you a cent: On Mother’s Day, all moms get a Rainbow Cone on the house at the Beverly ice cream shop at 9233 S. Western Ave.

For those of you unfamiliar with the South Side ice cream delicacy, it’s a Chicago tradition since 1926 — tasty chocolate, strawberry, Palmer House (that’s New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), pistachio ice creams and orange sherbet that are sliced rather than scooped and jammed into a cone.

“Last year we had 400 moms come through,” Rainbow Cone manager Michelle Desnoyer said. “And we hope to see many more this year, too.”

Take that as a hint. Rainbow Cone opens at noon. So, if you and your mom don’t want to stand in line you might want to get there around lunchtime.

“It usually takes a few hours to warm up and then it gets a little insane,” Desnoyer said.

“But that’s part of the fun, too. We get to see a lot of people. Some who come in before Mother’s Day make a mental note, or a note on their phone, to be sure to come back with their mom’s on Mother’s Day for a free Rainbow Cone.”

But don't plan stopping by to pick up Mom a Rainbow Cone to-go, showing up at the family-owned shop is part of the deal.

Here’s how the Mother’s Day special works: Mom gets a free small rainbow cone if she shows up at the shop with you ... and you buy one for yourself.
