ENGLEWOOD — Students from a new Englewood elementary school bowling league didn't win the state title over the weekend, but their coach said on Monday that winning it all was never the goal for the team's first trip to the finals.

"Winning was never pushed. It was more about learning a new activity," said David Berkson, the students' physical education teacher at Claremont Academy and the team coach. He took them to Joliet on Friday to compete in the Illinois Elementary School Association Bowling Tournament.

Theteam of eight was split into a girls team, which finished 28th out of 43 teams in the tournament, and a boys team, which finished 38th out of 46 teams, according to the Illinois Elementary School Association.

Berkson said that the girls' performance was "outstanding" because they never missed a practice and they were always ready to listen and learn.
