Northwest Side Parks Need Some Love on Earth Day

By Darryl Holliday | April 17, 2015 6:04am

LOGAN SQUARE — At least four parks around Logan Square and Humboldt Park will host Earth Day clean-up efforts Saturday, and with recent budget cuts to parks citywide the parks could use the help.

Neighborhood parks with scheduled Earth Day volunteer events include Palmer Square Park, 2200 N. Kedzie Ave.; the Paseo Prairie Garden, 2600 N. Kedzie Ave.; Unity Park, 2636 N. Kimball Ave.; and Humboldt Park, 1400 N. Sacramento Ave.

Palmer Square Park: Neighbors will meet at the park to mulch trees, maintain the running path and collect loose trash near the kids' playground. 9 a.m.-noon

The Paseo Prairie Garden: Neighbors will be cutting back last year's growth, spreading compost on the garden beds and mulch on the ground, then enjoying donated Boiler Room pizza at lunch time. 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Unity Park: Neighbors will replenish the gardens around the park perimeter and refresh the wood chips in the playground. Special attention will be given to the garden on the west side of the park at Schubert Avenue, after a driver crashed through the gates and destroyed much of landscaping in his path. A free Boulevard Bikes tune-up station and other family-friendly events will be set up at the park. 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Humboldt Park: The park's inland beach will be open this year! But thanks to $28 million budget cuts to parks citywide the outlook isn't rosy for spring 2016. Join one of several groups meeting at various locations to help clean up around the 219-acre park. Tools and equipment will be provided at each site. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
