ENGLEWOOD — Stephanie Coleman and Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th) were running neck and neck in the race for the 16th Ward.

With 89 percent of the vote tallied, Foulkes had 3,363 votes, or 50.25 percent to Coleman's 48.8 percent, or 3,199 votes.

Both candidates were forced into a runoff after Foulkes garnered 42 percent of the vote to Coleman's 36 percent in the February election.

Foulkes said she decided to run in the 16th Ward when 40 percent of her constituents became 16th Ward residents after a ward remap. When 16th Ward Ald. JoAnn Thompson suddenly died in February, Foulkes, Coleman and two other candidates were left in the Feb. 24 general election.

Since her 15th Ward election in 2007, Foulkes said she has been an “independent voice” at City Hall. She sits on seven City Council committees including finance, zoning, and capital and technology development. She supports a $15-an-hour minimum wage and wants to bring more jobs and workforce development to the 16th Ward.

Coleman is the daughter of former Ald. Shirley Coleman. The 27-year-old said she wants to boost public safety by strengthening relationships between the community and police. She also said working with block clubs is important.
