CHICAGO — The CTA will begin the next phase of upgrading the Brown and Purple lines this month, officials said in a statement.

Work on the CTA's Ravenswood Connector project, which aims to eliminate slow zones and create smoother rides for Brown and Purple line riders, will run from 8 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. April 13.

During the work, which will include upgrades and repairs of the "L" tracks between Armitage and Merchandise Mart, Brown Line trains will be rerouted to Red Line subway tracks between Fullerton and Roosevelt and will make all Red Line stops.

For service to or from the Armitage, Sedgwick, Chicago and Merchandise Mart Brown line stations, the CTA will operate free shuttle buses between Fullerton and Clark/Lake. In addition, a shuttle will operate around the Loop providing connections between Brown Line stations.

The work is scheduled to take place on 13 weekends through the remainder of the year, but not during major events such as Taste of Chicago or Lollapalooza.

The $90 million project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
