CITY HALL — The City Council will hold a special meeting Tuesday to honor the life and memory of Ald. JoAnn Thompson (16th).

Thompson died last month of heart failure at the age of 58, just two weeks before the municipal election.

At her funeral last month, Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the Englewood alderman "tough as nails" and said she "had a steel spine," but that "her toughness went hand in hand with her tenderness."

The council will vote on a resolution honoring Thompson, with aldermen no doubt showering her with praise. Her council chair was laid out with black and purple bunting and memorial flowers ahead of Tuesday's meeting.

With Thompson out of the running, no candidate gained a majority in last month's election. Ald. Toni Foulkes (15th), a member of the Progressive Reform Caucus who's trying to switch over after her ward was dramatically altered in the last remap, is in the April 7 runoff against Stephanie Coleman, 27-year-old daughter of former Ald. Shirley Coleman.
