'Surreal' Andersonville Car Fire Captured On Video

By Mina Bloom | February 2, 2015 3:38pm

ANDERSONVILLE — While the city was getting pummeled with snow Sunday evening, a car in Andersonville went up in flames.

A YouTube video shows a car engulfed in flames in an alley at Hermitage and Olive avenues around 3 a.m.

Chris Clem, a nearby resident whose apartment window overlooks the alley, posted the video. In it, he calls the fire the "most surreal thing he's ever seen."

"I don't know how this happened, but it's been pretty traumatic," he added.

Firefighters on the scene are shown hosing down the car. When Clem's video skips ahead 30 minutes, the fire is extinguished.

The owner of the car was reached, but he declined to comment. The inside of the torched car appeared to be burnt beyond repair and was still at the scene of the blaze Monday afternoon.

As of 2:45 p.m. Monday, a Chicago police spokesman hadn't been notified of the fire and fire officials didn't have any further information.

In nearby Lakeview, several suspicious fires, some of which classified as arson, were reported in the fall. The fires led to a police alert.
